The original LEDs proved to be too dim so they were replaced with higher brightness LEDs for the final incarnation of the project. Here is a video of it completed, along with an explanation of the building process and a note on materials.

After the original circuitboard failed time and time again I switched to a kit from Velleman which proved to work ideally for my purpose. It was altered somewhat to work with conductive thread. Here is a test of just the LEDs for the first time.

Even after excessive testing and fixing and all with the help of Ed Bennett, there was no way to get this thing to work. Nevertheless, here is a better picture of the board with all components soldered.

The VU Meter scarf was originally set to be built off of a somewhat poorly documented circuit from tehnik.com. Here is a photo of the homemade PCB with most of the components soldered in.
